Collection of Traditional Costumes of Mountainous Croatia and the Adriatic Hinterland

The Collection of Traditional Costumes of Mountainous Croatia and the Adriatic Hinterland received the aforementioned name in the 2014 systematization and includes clothing items from the regions of Lika, Kordun, Banovina, Gorski kotar, Ravni kotari, Bukovica and the Dalmatian Hinterland. The basis of this Collection is clothing from the first half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, which was collected and culturally and geographically interpreted in the beginning of the Museum’s activity, covering the regions of Lika, Dalmatian Hinterland and northwestern Bosnia. Ethnology recognized this type as Dinaric, so the Collection bore the aforementioned name for a long time, which was supposed to indicate specific phenomena in the material culture of these karst and mountainous regions. After World War II, the Collection was replenished by acquisitions through field research work. The collection consists of around 2,400 museum objects that illustrate a clothing style that is not characterized by many variations, but by a richly decorated individual piece of clothing. They are characterized by dull colors, an abundance of wool, decorative embroidery, cloth applications, and heavy metals jewelry and weapons that make the costume complete. The added value of the collection is the preservation of traditional clothing from regions that have been particularly devastated by numerous wars and migrations.
